An employee of the Elysee Palace stole porcelain tableware from the residence of French President Emmanuel Macron over a period of two years, Le Figaro reports.

The maître d’hôtel, Thomas M., who was responsible for table setting and inventorying tableware, stole around one hundred items made of Sevres porcelain—including cups, plates, and other objects belonging to France’s cultural heritage—worth tens of thousands of euros.

To conceal the losses, the employee falsified inventory documents and handed the stolen items over to porcelain collector Ghislaine M., who worked as a guard in one of the Louvre’s halls.

By court order, both men have been obliged to return the stolen property. Also, the collector has been barred from working at the Louvre, and the maître d’hôtel has been dismissed from his aforesaid position at the Elysee Palace.
