A Moscow district court has remotely ruled for the arrest of Garry Kasparov, the 13th World Chess Champion, for public calls to terrorism (Article 205.2, Section 2 of the Russian Criminal Code), according to a court document posted on the court’s website.

The respective session took place on Monday. The court had previously granted the motion for Kasparov’s pretrial detention, which was prohibited from being publicized.

The details of the case are unknown.

The maximum sentence for the charges against Kasparov is five to seven years of imprisonment.

In March 2024, Garry Kasparov was put on Russia’s list of “terrorists and extremists.” An asterisk next to his name indicates that a criminal case has been initiated against him under the “terrorism” article of the Russian Criminal Code.
