The issue of a ceasefire, or a ceasefire for a referendum, was not discussed during the negotiations. Russian leader Vladimir Putin is against it. US President Donald Trump stated this at a joint press conference Sunday with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy after their talks in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, USA.
Putin does not want a ceasefire for a referendum. He does not want to find himself in a situation where he stops the fire and then has to open fire again, Trump said, adding that he understands that position.
At the end of the press conference, speaking about the peace plan, Trump noted that it would take a few weeks if everything goes well. However, everything could go badly, leading to another round of fighting and dying, and they don’t want that to happen, he added.
Zelenskyy and Trump on Sunday met for nearly 2.5 hours at Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago, followed by a press conference. During the meeting, the two sides discussed differences over the peace plan initially proposed by the United States.
