In 2023, the situation in Armenia was different, there were shootings every day along the border. Often Armenian border guards were injured or killed. US ambassador to Armenia Kristina Kvien noted this in her remarks at a security forum Wednesday, also recalled the events of September 2023, when 110,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh were forcibly displaced from their homes to Armenia.

There was some concern and fear that there could be more conflict in the region. But since then, thanks to the vision of the Armenian prime minister and his team for the future and the support and engagement of the United States and the European Union, there is a much different situation now, Kvien added.

In 2025, the US reshaped its relationship with Armenia and renewed its high-level relationship, bringing it to a strategic partnership. The important thing about this is the fact that, together with this strategic partnership, they have developed a charter which also defined the path of their proposal, she added.

In the economic sense, they have done quite a lot of work, Kvien said,  and she highlighted two things that have been implemented or launched in recent months. The first was that now they already have three agreements negotiated. These are civil and nuclear energy agreements between Armenia and the US, which will give them greater opportunities and additional cooperation in terms of the use of a nuclear reactor for civilian purposes.

The US ambassador recalled cooperation with Armenia in the security sector, noting that this will help Armenia in the context of supporting its peacekeeping operations around the world and, in addition, will help the US armed forces to get to know each other better and understand each other's approaches. And lastly, they have worked a lot also in border security and border management, she added.

Reflecting on the Washington documents of August 8, 2025, Ambassador Kvien noted that after that, an even broader and more comprehensive vision was launched for Armenia-US and regional relations.

According to her, the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) project assumes broader cooperation, an important part of which is border security and management, and economic partnership. This takes their relations to the next phase and advances the prospects for peace in the entire region. Part of this was also the initialing of the text of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the fact that this text has already been approved is an important step, Kvien added.

The US remains committed to working with Armenia and other partners in the region, including Azerbaijan, to see that all the steps they have taken reach their logical conclusion and thereby bring lasting and fair peace and prosperity to Armenia and the region, she noted.

Also, the US ambassador to Armenia expressed hope this will mark the beginning of a new era where they will see Armenia as a transit route between Central Asia and Central Europe, an economic hub, as well as an IT hub for the region.
