The future depends on us. I mean on our two countries, especially on the leaders, and already the leaders of our two countries have shown their readiness and, most importantly, as Mr. Aliyev also noted, have shown political courage, will that truly for the sake of peace steps can be taken that will establish that peace. Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan stated this during a panel discussion, entitled “Defining Eurasia's Economic Identity,” on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also attended this panel discussion.

“What we have not seen for more than 30 years, we are now living in that situation. Two years, even a year ago, it was unbelievable that it would be possible to achieve such a situation in such a short time, when Armenia already has the opportunity to receive goods from Azerbaijan directly through the territory of Georgia. I am sure that the day will also come when we will receive these goods simply through our territories; that is, it will be via the Azerbaijan-Armenia, Nakhichevan-Armenia route,” Khachaturyan said.

He noted that now both Armenia and Azerbaijan are looking forward. “If we try to look back and try to find the reasons why this happened, it will deprive us of the opportunity that we have today. We are now living more with the work of implementation of our programs. We will have success because we have clear agreements, we have adopted clear principles, which means that we respect the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and our jurisdiction of both countries, and will be guided by these principles. We will open our borders, and I am also sure that in X years there will not only be such high-level political meetings, but it will be a regular process when our citizens from Armenia or Azerbaijan can cross the border, conduct trade, take advantage of the advantages that we both have,” the Armenian president said.

According to Vahagn Khachaturyan, as a result of this cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, they will become very beneficial, as a region, as the South Caucasus, and also for the world. “The discussion that we are having now to ensure the Europe-Asia connection, the best way for it is the South Caucasus itself. And this process will have success also because there is also an economic interest here, in addition to the political one. This will strengthen the agreement that we have reached. The leaders of the two countries agree on shared principles, so it is possible to achieve success. Of course, I cannot fail to also note there the role of the President of the United States, Mr. [Donald] Trump, who was able to take on such a responsibility and signed that historic document with the leaders of our two countries on August 8,” the Armenian president said.
