Three Azerbaijani citizens suspected of plotting a terrorist attack against a foreign embassy in the capital city Baku have been detained in Azerbaijan, the latter’s State Security Service informs.

According to its data, during the respective investigation, substantiated suspicions emerged that Ilgar Guliyev (born in 2000), Amin Piriyev, and Elvin Alizadeh (both born in 2005) planned to carry out a terrorist attack near the embassy of a foreign state on the grounds of religious enmity.

They had established criminal ties with militants of the Wilayat Khorasan group, a branch of the international terrorist organization Islamic State.

According to the investigation, acting on the basis of a preliminary conspiracy, they had acquired items that they intended to use as weapons, but they were detained by special services officers as they approached the aforesaid diplomatic mission.

All three were charged under articles that provide for punishment for plotting a terrorist act on the grounds of religious enmity.

The court imposed arrest as the pretrial detention measure against them.
