Russian ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin believes that Armenia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) could find compromise solutions to the problematic issues that have risen between Yerevan and this military alliance.

In an interview with Rossiya-24 television, the Russian diplomat reflected on the position of the Armenian authorities on CSTO membership, and noted that in recent days there have been public statements by members of the Armenian leadership, in particular, that the current frozen status will not change.

“As for the position of the Russian Federation, we proceed from the fact that Armenia continues to remain a full member of the CSTO. As for the frozen format, it is not provided for in the contractual-legal basis of the organization. In our [i.e. Russia’s] conviction, there is no alternative, reliable mechanism for ensuring security in the region,” Kopyrkin said.

“As for the problems that have arisen in terms of [Armenia’s] cooperation with the CSTO, I believe that we can always find solutions within the framework of the CSTO members, in a partnership manner, including compromise solutions to the accumulated problems," the Russian diplomat concluded.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had announced that Armenia had frozen its participation in the CSTO because, according to him, this organization posed a threat to the sovereignty of the country. And in December last year, the Armenian premier had announced that relations between Armenia and the CSTO had passed the point of no return.
