US Vice President JD Vance discussed—in Azerbaijan—the release of Armenian prisoners in Baku, the Vance’s press secretary said after the US Vice President’s meeting with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, reports Azatutyun, the RFE/RL’s Armenian service.

President Aliyev and Vice President Vance discussed the next steps in US President Donald Trump’s initiative to establish peace in Armenia and Azerbaijan. They focused on trade and prosperity, technology and diplomatic ties, and also talked about next steps, including signing agreements and licenses for the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) project, as well as confidence-building measures such as release of prisoners, American investments, and regional economic integration, the US Vice President’s spokesperson said.

The American side, however, did not elaborate on what the Azerbaijani side’s response was and whether there were any agreements on this matter.

JD Vance had promised to raise the issue of Armenian captives in Baku before his flight there from Yerevan.

The Armenian captives in Baku were recently sentenced to long terms of imprisonment, in some cases, to life imprisonment.
