We have selected—by 2025—what type of nuclear power plant we want to have in Armenia. It is a modular-type nuclear power plant, but we are not in a hurry with what type and model of nuclear power plant we want to have, we are studying the proposals we have, including from the US. Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Davit Khudatyan told this to a press briefing Friday—and regarding Armenian News-NEWS.am's question about whom Armenia will give the preference to in building a new nuclear power plant in the country, taking into account that after US Vice President JD Vance's visit, there is an impression that the US has been given this task.

"We [i.e. Armenia] are studying all the [respective] proposals that we have received from the United States, the Russian Federation, [South] Korea, and also China, France. We will make a decision taking into account many circumstances," Khudatyan said.

And regarding the fact that, according to experts, modular nuclear power plants are not tested and are not safe, Khudatyan said: “I believe that in the modern world there are no dangerous nuclear plants. In particular, if those countries, if they deploy, build nuclear power plants in their countries, then the issue of danger is not on the agenda. Why [a] modular [nuclear plan]? Because it provides great additional flexibility in managing our energy system.”

“The significant increase in the amount of solar power plants over the past year has led to the fact that we have very often had to keep our main capacities, including the Metsamor nuclear power plant, in the energy system at an amount considerably lower than its productive capacity. A modular nuclear power plant enables us to be much more flexible in the management process, which is both a security issue for us and a matter of ensuring stability in the energy system. That is exactly what made us choose modular nuclear power plant,” the territorial administration and infrastructure minister added.
