The Armenian government has officially confirmed that Russian border guards have been removed from the Akhurik checkpoint on the Armenia-Turkey border and that Armenian border guards of the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia are now serving there. Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned about this from the study of the implementation report of the Armenian government program for 2025.

In particular, it is noted that during 2025, work continued on the technical re-equipment, staffing, development of professional capabilities of the NSS of Armenia, increasing the effectiveness of guarding the state border of Armenia, and other areas.

Starting from March 1, 2025, service at the Margara checkpoint on the Armenia-Turkey state border is carried out solely by servicemen of the border troops of the NSS of Armenia. And from the beginning of 2026, only the servicemen of the Armenian NSS Border Guard Troops are serving at the Akhurik checkpoint on the Armenia-Turkey state border. Currently, there is no operational checkpoint on the Armenian state border that is not under the full overseeing of the Armenian NSS Border Guard Troops.

At the beginning of the year, information was disseminated about the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the Akhurik checkpoint in Armenia, but the Armenian authorities had not confirmed this information.

Earlier, Russian border guards were withdrawn from the Armenian-Iranian border checkpoint and Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport, and service on the Armenian-Iranian and Armenian-Turkish borders is carried out jointly with Armenian border guards.
