Pakistan has launched airstrikes on several Afghan cities, including the capital Kabul, Al Jazeera reports.

Residents of the Afghan capital reported multiple loud explosions overnight.

Islamabad later announced the destruction of 27 Taliban positions and nine other attacks.

Pakistan added that 133 Afghan soldiers had been killed and more than 200 wounded.

Also, the Pakistani air force struck a large ammunition depot in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, Geo News reports.

Earlier, the Taliban announced an offensive in Pakistan's border provinces in response to Pakistani attacks. According to the Afghan side, the Taliban captured one base and 19 checkpoints along the border, killing 55 soldiers.

Armed clashes broke out in the border zone between Pakistan and Afghanistan two days ago. Both sides have exchanged accusations. Also, Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan over the weekend. Islamabad said it had killed at least 80 militants, while Kabul reported attacks on a religious school and residential buildings, which killed at least 17 people in Nangarhar alone.

The two countries had agreed to a ceasefire last fall after talks in Doha brokered by Qatar and Turkey.

Islamabad accuses Kabul of failing to take action against militant groups that carry out attacks in Pakistan. The Taliban government denies this.

Afghanistan and Pakistan have had a border dispute since 1947, when Islamabad gained independence after the partition of British India. The border between the countries runs along the 2,600-kilometer Durand Line, established by an 1893 agreement. However, Kabul considers this a colonial border that deprived Afghanistan of part of its historic Pashtun territories. No Afghan government has recognized the Durand Line border.
