Russian airlines have suspended flights to Iran and Israel, the newspaper Kommersant reports, citing the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.

“Due to the closure of the airspace of Iran and Israel, Russian airlines, in coordination with the Transport Ministry and the Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviation), have prearranged alternative flight routes to safely operate flights to the Persian Gulf countries. As a result of the increased distance, flight times will rise,” the ministry said.

If necessary, flights will be consolidated and operated using wide-body aircraft. Carriers will notify passengers of schedule changes.

Under the current schedule, flights between Russia and Israel are operated by Red Wings Airlines and Azimuth Airlines. Red Wings will adjust its flight schedule to Israel. The changes will remain in effect “until full flight safety is restored,” the company said.

Aeroflot operates flights to Iran once a week on Thursdays — the next one was scheduled for March 5. The airline’s press service stated that the decision on operating that flight will depend on how long Iranian airspace remains closed.

Flights to and from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Malé have also been adjusted and will operate via routes bypassing Iran. “The increase in flight time will result in departure delays for return flights by an average of one to two hours,” Aeroflot said. Some flights between Moscow/St. Petersburg and Dubai have been temporarily canceled.
