Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said in an interview with NBC News that it is not the United States' job to choose Iran's next leader and that the US should not interfere in the situation following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Seyyed Khamenei.

Responding to anchor Kristen Welker's question about whether the US has a plan to ensure that Iran's future will be determined by Iranians themselves and that Iran will not be "a leading state sponsor of terrorism," Graham said this is not up to the Americans.

"That's not his job or my job," Graham said. "How many times do I have to tell you? Our job is to make sure Iran is no longer the largest state sponsor of terrorism, to help the people form a new government. No boots on the ground."

At the same time, during the interview Graham argued that it was in the United States' interest to ensure that Khamenei was dead.

"It is in America's interest to make sure Iran can no longer be the largest state sponsor of terrorism," the American senator said.
