NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe is closely monitoring developments in Iran and the Middle East and is adjusting forces as necessary to protect against "potential threats," AFP reports, citing an alliance statement.

The commander, US General Alexus Grynkewich, "has and will continue to adjust NATO's very capable force posture to assure the security of 32 member nations and defend the North Atlantic Alliance against potential threats," the NATO statement reads.

The statement also references the threat of "ballistic missiles or unmanned aerial vehicles emanating from this or other regions."

Israel struck Iran on the morning of February 28. US President Donald Trump also announced the launch of a US military operation against Iran. Strikes hit military facilities in western Iran, the residence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as an elementary school in the city of Minab.

As a result of these attacks, Iran's Supreme Leader and a number of the country's military leaders were killed.

In response, Iran launched missile strikes against Israel and US military bases in the region.
