NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Tuesday that European US allies broadly support President Donald Trump's military campaign against Iran, AFP reports.

Washington's bombardment of Iran, which killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has led to airstrikes across the Middle East.

"I sense broad support in Europe. I have spoken by phone with many leaders over the weekend and at the start of this week," Rutte told journalists during a visit to North Macedonia. "I clearly sensed that the rejection of nuclear capability, the rejection of ballistic missiles, and the departure of Khamenei — all of this is welcomed by many of my colleagues in NATO."

Rutte emphasized that NATO, a military alliance created to defend Europe and North America, "has not been involved" in military operations. "But I can assure you that NATO will defend every inch of NATO territory," he said.

The US and Israel have been striking Iranian territory since February 28, causing destruction and casualties. In response, Iran has been launching missile strikes against Israel and US military bases in the region. Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Seyyed Khamenei and other senior officials were also killed in the Israeli-American strikes.

On March 2, Hezbollah joined the war against Israel. Israel announced the launch of an offensive operation against the movement and entered southern Lebanon.
