Part of the roof of the main office building collapsed and smoke filled the interior after several drones struck the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, according to an internal State Department message obtained by The Washington Post on Tuesday.

"The chancery building remains filled with smoke and part of its roof has collapsed," the message states.

The report emphasizes that the alleged Iranian drone attack on Monday caused greater damage than initially suggested by early reports. Iranian media outlet Mehr had earlier reported that the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia burned down in the drone attack.

Saudi Arabia's Defense Ministry confirmed the attack, stating it caused "a minor fire and limited material damage." According to one of two sources, there were no initial reports of casualties.

The US and Israel launched a military operation against Iran on February 28. Strikes hit the Iranian capital Tehran and the country's largest cities. Immediately after the strikes, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced a large-scale retaliatory operation. Iran reportedly launched missiles and drones at Israel and US military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Seyyed Khamenei and other senior officials were also killed in the Israeli-American strikes.

On March 2, Hezbollah joined the war against Israel. Israel announced the launch of an offensive operation against the movement.
