UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called on the US to immediately conduct an impartial investigation into strikes on a girls' elementary school in Iran that killed 165 people.

"We have obviously asked the United States to conduct a prompt, transparent and impartial investigation, which we understand the United States has announced. We need to make sure that there is accountability," he told journalists in Geneva. Türk added that compensation for victims must also be ensured.

Earlier, Reuters reported that the strike on the school may have been carried out by US military. Fars agency also claimed that Iranian authorities have identified the military personnel responsible for the strike.

On February 28, Iranian authorities reported that the US and Israel struck a girls' elementary school in the southern city of Minab. The latest death toll stands at 165 — mostly students, as well as parents and teachers. Another 95 people were wounded.
