US President Donald Trump on Saturday floated the idea of sending ground troops to Iran to secure the country's enriched uranium stockpiles as part of efforts to wind down Tehran's nuclear program, AFP reports.

"At some point, maybe we'll do that. That would be great," he told journalists during a briefing aboard Air Force One. "We haven't gotten to that yet, but that's something we could do later."

Some critics of the US-Israeli war with Iran, launched last Saturday, have said that airstrikes alone are unlikely to achieve the stated goals of destroying Iran's military capabilities and preventing it from building a nuclear bomb.

Asked about the use of ground troops in general, Trump did not rule it out, saying: "Could it be? Possibly, for a very good reason — there would have to be a very good reason for that."

"And I would say that if we ever do it, they will be so obliterated that they won't be able to fight on the ground," the US president added.
