Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned against attempts to ignite a civil war inside Iran, AFP reports.

Fidan said any attempts to spark a civil war within Iran in a bid to achieve regime change would be a "historic" mistake.

"We are against all scenarios aimed at igniting civil war in Iran, targeting ethnic or religious divisions," Fidan told journalists in Istanbul. "This is the most dangerous scenario," he added.

The Turkish foreign minister spoke following reports that Washington plans to arm Kurdish militants to infiltrate Iran, with US President Donald Trump having expressed support for such an offensive. Such a move would anger Turkey, which has fought a bloody conflict with the Kurdistan Workers' Party for decades and is now seeking to end it. Fidan said he discussed the matter with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who denied any American involvement.

"They stated that they are not involved in such efforts and have no such intention," Fidan said.

"We are openly warning everyone... against this scenario. This will not only lead to even more suffering and the deaths of innocent civilians in Iran, but will also cause millions of people to be forced to leave their homes and flee to neighboring countries and beyond. We hope that Kurdish leaders in the region will not make the mistake of taking on such historic responsibility. Such a mistake will never be corrected. After Iraq and Syria, a prolonged period of uncertainty, war and disorder in Iran is not in anyone's interest. Any internal crisis there will cause a ripple effect spreading across the entire region. That is why we are trying to stop it," he added.
