The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) warned that it will continue to target any successor to slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Seyyed Khamenei.

In a statement posted on X in Persian, the IDF warned that it will also target anyone who attempts to appoint a successor to Khamenei — referring to the religious body tasked with choosing the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

"After neutralizing the tyrant Khamenei, Iran's terrorist regime is trying to reconstitute itself and choose a new leader. Iran's Assembly of Experts, which has not convened for decades, will soon meet in the city of Qom. We want to tell you that the State of Israel will continue to target every successor and every person who seeks to appoint a successor. We warn all those who intend to participate in the meeting to select a successor that we will not hesitate to choose you as well," the Israeli army stated.

Earlier, Iranian media reported that the Assembly of Experts had reached a consensus on the choice of Iran's next Supreme Leader. Under Iran's constitution, the 88-member Assembly of Experts is empowered to select the country's Supreme Leader. Khamenei, who ruled Iran for 37 years, was killed in the US-Israeli strike on Tehran on February 28.
