The Assembly of Experts of Iran has elected Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the country.

The announcement was read on state television. Mojtaba Khamenei is the son of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who was killed at the beginning of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.

The eighth American serviceperson was killed since the start of the war with Iran. The US Central Command said the soldier died of wounds he received in Saudi Arabia on March 1.
