Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed a “historic” law on the Nakhchivan exclave of Azerbaijan, the latter’s media report.

Accordingly, it is about the law “On Amendments to the Constitution of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.”

Prior to these amendments, the preamble to the Nakhchivan “constitution” stated that “the foundations of the region’s autonomy were laid by international treaties: the Treaty of Moscow of March 16, 1921, and the Treaty of Kars of October 13, 1921.”

These treaties confirmed that Nakhchivan is part of Azerbaijan, and also specified its territorial borders.

The new wording emphasizes that Nakhchivan is an “indivisible part” of Azerbaijan.

Thus, "references to international treaties" are being removed from the "constitution" of Nakhchivan.
