The completion of the Baku–Nakhijevan railway line will be a key step in strengthening trade resilience between Europe and Asia, European Council President António Costa said after he met with President Ilham Aliyev.

According to Costa, the EU considers Azerbaijan a key partner. "Over the past year, our relations have gained new momentum, and today's meeting is clear evidence of our shared commitment to further cooperation, especially in the areas of security, energy, digital technologies, and transport."

On energy, Costa noted that Azerbaijan has played a key role through the Southern Gas Corridor, and that amid the war in Iran — which is destabilizing global energy markets — the energy partnership takes on special significance. The EU is ready to mobilize private investment to support Azerbaijan's energy transition.

On transport, Costa highlighted the Middle Corridor as a strategic opportunity, saying the completion of the Baku–Nakhijevan railway would strengthen Europe-Asia trade resilience, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

Costa said the EU shares Azerbaijan's goals for a peaceful, stable and prosperous South Caucasus, calling progress in the peace process with Armenia "historic" and expressing support for full implementation of the Washington agreements.

The EU expressed full solidarity with Azerbaijan, condemning Iran's recent attack on Nakhijevan airport. Costa emphasized that any further escalation threatens not only the Middle East but Europe and the world, and reaffirmed the EU's commitment to dialogue and diplomacy.

He concluded by noting that the EU looks forward to hosting the European Political Community summit in Baku in 2028, and expressed readiness to work with Azerbaijan to turn today's challenges into tomorrow's opportunities.
