Ali Al-Salem air base in Kuwait, which hosts US and Italian armed forces, came under a drone attack today, Italian Chief of Defense Staff General Luciano Portolano announced.
According to Portolano, the attack destroyed a remotely piloted aircraft belonging to the Italian Air Force.
"It was an irreplaceable asset for operational activities and remained at the base to ensure continuity of operations," he said.
Portolano said all Italian personnel at the base were safe during the attack. He noted that several days before the attack, the number of Italian military personnel had been reduced "in response to the changing security situation in the area."
Those remaining at the base are directed to carry out essential mission tasks, he wrote, adding that "the Chief of Defense Staff and the Joint Operations Headquarters are constantly monitoring the situation, maintaining constant contact with the contingents on the ground."
