US officials have confirmed on Monday that the summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping is likely to be postponed due to the US war with Iran.

It is entirely possible that the meeting will be postponed, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News. Leavitt added that she does not think the summit is at risk, but it is only a matter of time.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday, Trump had insinuated that the postponement of this summit could be part of his efforts to pressure Beijing to help him reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

China maintains close relations with Iran and is a major buyer of Iranian oil.

Earlier on Monday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also announced that the summit, scheduled for March 31-April 2, may be postponed.
