A series of powerful explosions has struck the Iranian capital, the scale and intensity of which Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Suhaib al-Asa described as "unprecedented." The eastern part of the city was hit particularly hard.

According to his reports, Iran's air defense systems were activated in response to the ongoing strikes. Such measures are typically taken when drones — including those of presumed American and Israeli origin — are detected in the airspace above the city.

Iranian media, in particular the Fars news agency, report "terrifying sounds of explosions" recorded across five districts of Tehran — Districts 1, 4, 11, 13, and 21. Information on damage and possible casualties is still being confirmed.

Among the affected areas are districts near the Shahid Babai expressway, as well as Garmdareh on the eastern outskirts of the capital. In addition, a powerful explosion was heard at the intersection of Hafez and Jomhuri streets — a densely populated area home to government institutions, commercial buildings, and residential properties.
