US Army command is discussing the possibility of deploying an airborne brigade to the Middle East, The New York Times reports, citing Pentagon representatives.
According to the newspaper's sources, the brigade is planned to be formed from "immediate response" units of the 82nd Airborne Division, totaling around 3,000 military personnel who can be deployed anywhere in the world within 18 hours. This brigade may be used to seize Kharg Island.
According to CBS News, 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit may also participate in the seizure of Kharg Island. They are already heading to the Middle East and are expected to arrive in approximately three weeks.
