The closure of the airspace of a number of Middle Eastern countries due to the Iran war that began on February 28 has led to an increase in transit flights through the airspace of the Republic of Armenia (RA).

As a result of the closure of the airspace of Iran and several other countries in the region, 6,414 transit flights were carried out through Armenia’s airspace from February 28 to March 23, which is 129 more than the indicator for the same period in 2025.

As informed by the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia in response to a request from Armenian News-NEWS.am, despite the overall increase, a certain decrease in the number of flights has been observed since the second ten days of March, and the choice of routes remains exclusively within the jurisdiction of airlines. The Committee added that the decision on the selection of flight routes is solely within the competence of the aircraft operator.

“Due to the change in the regional security situation, virtually no new airlines operating transit flights through RA airspace have been recorded. No problems have arisen with the air navigation service of transit flights through RA airspace, as well as no restrictions on flight acceptance due to overloading have been applied,” the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia’s response sent to Armenian News-NEWS.am also states.
