A critical American radar was damaged in an Iranian attack on Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base on Wednesday, a new satellite image has revealed, CNN reports.

The radar, an AN/TPY-2, is a crucial piece of equipment for the US’ high-end Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile interception system.

The strike was part of a pattern of attacks by Iran seemingly intended to degrade the US’ ability to detect incoming missiles and drones by striking radars.

Iranian strikes also destroyed another American AN/TPY-2 radar in Jordan, targeted military communications infrastructure, and damaged a Qatari early warning radar that cost over $1 billion to build.
