Armenian National Assembly speaker Alen Simonyan’s statement, according to which Armenia will withdraw from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and other organizations if Russian natural gas prices rise, is inaccurate, deputy speaker of the Russian Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, stated Monday, reports Parlamentskaya gazeta.

"Such a wording of the question in itself is incorrect. After all, on April 1, during negotiations with RA [i.e. the Republic of Armenia] Prime Minister N. Pashinyan [at the Kremlin], Russian President V.V. Putin clearly described the current situation: energy prices, [natural] gas prices in Europe are growing sharply, reaching more than $600 per 1,000 cubic meters, while Russia sells [natural] gas to Armenia for $177.50 per 1,000 cubic meters," Kosachev noted.

According to him, the current price of Russian natural gas is a powerful incentive for the development of Armenia’s economy and an important factor in terms of the country’s social and political stability. And this, as Kosachov noted, is happening in parallel with the severe energy crisis in Europe and the whole world. “It would be fair and honest for Armenian politicians to take into account the scale of Russia’s support for Armenia, rather than speculate on hypothetical changes in pricing policy,” the Russian senator concluded.
