Teachers across Turkey have gone on strike and staged mass protests after a deadly armed attack at a school in the city of Sanliurfa, Turkish media report.

The teachers are demanding the resignation of education minister Yusuf Tekin, alleging that schools in Turkey have long been inadequately protected. They claim that the suspect in the aforesaid armed attack had previously posted threats on social media, but that they were ignored by law enforcement.

During the protests in the capital, Ankara, there were clashes with police in front of the education ministry. Protesters accuse Turkish authorities of paying insufficient attention to the security of the country’s schools and demand accountability for the aforementioned armed attack.

There have been two deadly armed attacks on schools in Turkey in the past three days.
