Belgian Ambassador Julien de Fraipont and Dutch Ambassador Marianne de Jong on Monday were separately summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan, the MFA informs.

“During the meetings, a strong protest was expressed against the documents adopted by the Parliaments of Belgium and Netherlands on 16 April 2026, which represent yet another reckless attempt to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, as well as the ongoing peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”

Baku believes that these “documents are based on utterly false and unfounded assessments, reflecting a deeply rooted anti-Azerbaijani bias within these institutions.”

The ambassadors were told that the “unacceptable claims contained therein constitute gross violations of international law, and represent blatant interference in the rule of law.”

“Moreover, during the meetings the falsified references concerning the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan as well as all baseless accusations alleging violations of Armenia’s territorial integrity, the rights of ethnic Armenians, and claims regarding the so-called unlawful detention of persons of Armenian origin were strongly and resolutely rejected,” the Azerbaijan MFA added.

It was noted that the “the adoption of these documents is particularly paradoxical considering that they were coincided with the latest meeting between the Speakers of the Parliaments of Azerbaijan and Armenia.”

Also, Azerbaijan called on Belgium and the Netherlands “to take effective measures to prevent anti-Azerbaijani groups within their respective Parliaments from damaging bilateral relations.”

On April 16, the House of Representatives of the Netherlands passed two motions by MP Don Ceder on the release of Armenian prisoners of war in Azerbaijan and the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

On the same day, the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium passed a resolution by Michel de Maegd on the right of return of the Armenian residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, under international security guarantees, the establishment of an effective international monitoring mechanism, the withdrawal of Azerbaijani armed forces from their positions since May 12, 2021, and the resolution of the issue of Armenian prisoners and civilians held in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku․
