Russia shares the grief of the Armenian people on the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, stated Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a briefing.

"Russia's position is objective and consistent—there can be no justification for mass extermination based on ethnicity," the diplomat emphasized, adding that Russia has perceived this tragedy as its own grief from the very beginning.

The Russian State Duma adopted a resolution "On the condemnation of the genocide of the Armenian people of 1915–1922" back in 1995. The fact of the genocide has been recognized by 23 states, the European Parliament, and the World Council of Churches.
