YEREVAN. – Armenia’s ruling Republican Party (RPA) prefers to work within a broader authorized body than in some informal structure, Armenia’s Deputy Parliament Speaker and Spokesperson of Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Eduard Sharmazanov told Armenian News-NEWS.am commenting on the agreement of creating a joint headquarter for monitoring the parliamentary elections signed by Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), ARF Dashnaktsutyun, Heritage Party and Armenian National Congress (ANC).

Sharmazanov mentioned that some days ago Armenian Parliament Speaker Samvel Nikoyan had announced that he is going to use his constitutional right and create a consultative body which will follow the procedures of the upcoming elections.

“Representatives of parliamentary and non-parliamentary forces and NGO’s will be included in the consultative body. As the parliament speaker is able to create a body with more power, we find it right to work in the framework of that body and not some informal structure,” Sharmazanov said.

To note, on Wednesday opposition Armenian National Congress, Prosperous Armenia Party, ARF Dashnaktsutyun and Heritage Party signed a joint agreement on creating a single headquarter for monitoring the elections.

The deputy chairman of RPA Galust Sahakyan who was participating in the discussion refused to sign the agreement.

Eight political parties and one block have presented their nominations – Republican Party of Armenian, Prosperous Armenia Party, Orinats Yerkir, opposition Armenian National Congress, opposition Heritage Party, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, the Communist Party of Armenia, Democratic Party of Armenia and United Armenians Party.

For entering the National Assembly, parties must poll over 5% of votes, while blocks - over 7%.

The election campaign will be held till May 5 - the day prior to elections when campaigning is banned. The parliamentary elections will be held from 8 am to 8 pm on May 6, 2012.
