It is important for Europe to protect the freedom of the Armenian people to choose their own destiny. European Council President Antonio Costa stated this during the inaugural Armenia-European Union (EU) summit in Yerevan, Tuesday.

Also, Costa described the summit of the European Political Community held in Yerevan Monday as historic. According to him, today is the second historic event. This is a clear signal about how the EU wants to build relations with Armenia, the European Council president noted.

According to him, Armenia has entered a new phase of democracy and peace, which creates a favorable environment for development, including the expansion of bilateral relations. Costa noted that ties have further strengthened ever since the launch of the new Armenia-EU agenda approved in December last year.

The president of the European Council also noted that the parties are closely cooperating in the security sector, using the European toolbox to combat hybrid threats. He added that the EU mission aimed at democratic resistance also serves the same purpose.

It is important for Europe to protect the freedom of the Armenian people to choose their own path. Armenians can trust Europe, as the latter is ready to walk this path hand in hand and build their shared future, said Costa.

Also, the president of the European Council stressed that Armenia is of key importance for the route from Europe to the Caspian Sea and Central Asia.
