France is in favor of stopping any military action in the Strait of Hormuz. French President Emmanuel Macron stated this during a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in Yerevan on Tuesday.

“We want free and fair trade, in accordance with the rules and agreements. It is necessary to respect the agreements reached,” Macron noted, adding that he considers EU intervention possible only in case of direct threats.

According to him, instead of destabilizing the situation, other measures are needed. “Our countries need stability and confidence. I hope that common sense will prevail.”

Responding to a question about the negotiations between Paris and Tehran, Macron said that he was going to talk to the president of Iran, but did not specify what specifically he would say to the Iranian side.

"France has always been committed to its well-known position: we call for an end to all military actions and for diplomatic action, respecting all countries in the region," Macron said.

The French president recalled that he had condemned the attack on the United Arab Emirates Monday, stressing that transit through the Strait of Hormuz is a necessity.

"It must be open to all ships, without fees or coercion. Escalation is wrong because it only increases tensions," Macron added.
