The amendments proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Armenia envisage the introduction of the institute of "diplomatic offices". Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan announced this during the debates on the package of bills on amendments to the law on diplomatic service and related laws at Monday’s special session of the National Assembly.

"There are countries where it is not considered sensible to open a full-fledged embassy from a financial or other point of view, but there is a need for a diplomatic presence, and there we propose to establish a diplomatic office, the management of which will be carried out by the [Armenian] ambassador accredited to that country," the FM explained.

The draft also proposes to review the terms of office of ambassadors and permanent representatives. "We propose to provide [Armenia’s] ambassadors with the opportunity to continue their [diplomatic] service in the country of accreditation for a period of up to 5 years," Mirzoyan said.

The legislative package submitted by the Armenian MFA also includes provisions that regulate the remuneration of persons performing diplomatic service.
