Russia and Armenia are connected by special relations based on shared history, close humanitarian contacts, and mutual sympathy of peoples, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in an interview with blogger Olga Blagoveshchenskaya.

According to Zakharova, Moscow views Armenia not only as a sovereign state, but also as a country with which Russia is united by long-standing historical ties, joint projects, family ties, business contacts, and the intertwining of human destinies.

Commenting on Russian-Armenian relations, the Russian MFA spokesperson said that Moscow has consistently sought to support Yerevan. In her words, this position was based not only on geopolitical interests, but also on the strong humanitarian ties between the two peoples.

“From our [i.e. Russia] side, there has always been only help and support, which, in my opinion, was connected both with geopolitical components, as is customary to say among diplomats, and with what I call ‘love.’ The sincere love of peoples and cultures, the interpenetration, and these very real ties,” she said.

Also, Zakharova noted that Russia and Armenia are united by a shared cultural space. She recalled the role of Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that he has repeatedly made efforts to stop bloody conflicts, provide assistance to Armenia in difficult regions, and contribute to the development of the country.

According to the Russian MFA spokesperson, cooperation between Moscow and Yerevan covers not only security issues, but also the economy, energy, and industry.

"This is our [i.e. Russia’s] approach, and we are committed to it," Maria Zakharova concluded.
