The uncertain status of Yerevan’s course towards the European Union (EU) is beneficial to the Armenian authorities and the EU, parliament’s opposition “Armenia” Faction member Levon Kocharyan stated during a press conference Tuesday.

Touching upon the lack of reaction from European officials to the incumbent Armenian authorities’ pressure on political opponents, Kocharyan stressed that 10 or 20 years ago it was impossible to imagine that the head of state would so arrogantly threaten with putting people in jail or ask “why aren’t they [i.e. Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians] dead” and that this would not be followed by appropriate actions.

“Now there is complete silence,” added the opposition MP.

According to him, these issues are raised in private conversations, many European colleagues acknowledge the problem, but there is no public reaction.

Kocharyan said that the "Armenia" Faction has asked EU embassies and representations in Armenia to hold meetings in this regard, but has not yet received a response.

The opposition lawmaker added that they will do everything so that the EU cannot turn a blind eye to such brazen illegalities in Armenia.

"As for the European Union, it seems that this incomprehensible situation is beneficial to the parties. We [i.e. Armenia] are supposedly moving towards the EU, but there is no official process, because otherwise they would have to react. Now it is in their interest that they can ignore numerous violations [in Armenia]," Kocharyan noted.

Also, he said the promise of the Armenian government to achieve a visa-free regime with the EU by 2029 was another lie by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and with the intention of gaining political dividends.

Lawyer Hovhannes Khudoyan, in turn, added that human rights violations and electoral fraud in Armenia are evidence of lies. According to him, the integration of the Azerbaijani authoritarian regime is currently taking place in the country.
