Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ararat Mirzoyan suggests enjoying warm relations with the European Union (EU) at this phase and figuring out in the future what Armenia’s destination is for moving towards the EU. No one knows this right now; neither Armenia, nor the EU, nor the member states, Mirzoyan said at the Warsaw Security Forum, Sputnik Armenia reports.

He noted that Armenia’s current relations with the EU are unprecedentedly deep and close and cover various domains. The minister added that this is not only about political dialogue, economic cooperation, support for trade, but also about security, foreign policy, etc.

As per Mirzoyan, serious talks about EU membership have just begun in Armenia, but there have been no in-depth public discussions on the matter, although the country’s law on the launch of the EU membership process was passed in the spring of 2024. The minister said he is not sure that the EU has decided to accept Armenia as a full member right away tomorrow even if the country says “yes.”

In the context of Armenia’s relations with the EU, Mirzoyan spoke also about Russia, and noted that Armenia has historically close relations with Russia. Historically, Armenia and Russia have been very close and still have very strong ties, but the possible reaction must be managed.

No one wants to create new enemies in the world, and there is no intention to harm anyone, any third party, the Armenian foreign minister said. In his view, at this phase, Armenia, the EU, and its member states are enjoying the process. Also, Mirzoyan called on to continue these warm relations, explore new opportunities, and then at some point in the future they will discuss together whether to “get married” or not.
