During the meeting held in Bishkek, I told the Azerbaijani side that it is unacceptable for us that matters related to our constitution are being raised in Azerbaijan. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday stated this at a press briefing following the Cabinet meeting of the Armenian government.

In response, as the head of the Armenian government noted, the Azerbaijani side admitted that the matter of the constitution is an internal affair of Armenia.

“Nevertheless, they informed [us] that they have a respective political position [i.e. signing the peace treaty only after changing the constitution of Armenia]… But if we have decided to change our constitution one way or another, and this, by the way, is part of our government’s program, what prevents us from combining the pleasant with the useful? That is, if Azerbaijan says something like this, what? Should we abandon our agenda? No, we must go that way and adopt a new constitution,” the Armenian premier added.

According to him, the draft of the new constitution of Armenia will be publicized in the near future, and it will be sent to the parliament for debates.

“And we will try to convince our opposition colleagues that this is an extremely important and principled issue. We will try to convince [them]. If it doesn't work, we will go with other scenarios. For example, we could hold snap [parliamentary] elections. And who said that such a scenario is excluded?” Pashinyan noted.

Then he added that he has an obligation to the citizens of Armenia to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan and change the constitution of Armenia.
