YEREVAN. – The new highway, whose official opening was conducted on Saturday, will enable drivers to travel by bypassing the Tsitsernakaberd Highway, in capital city Yerevan, and, as a result, their travel time will reduce by an average of 15 to 20 minutes (PHOTOS). 

“The road is 5.5 km long, it is constructed with all the modern technologies, [and] it is good quality. About two dozen trees were cut [to construct the motorway], in whose stead 25,000 square meters of new green space has been created, [and] 2,500 trees have been planted,” Sirekan Ohanyan, the director of the company that planned the highway, told reporters at the official opening.       

He added that 6.1 billion drams (approx. $14,753,400) were spent on the construction of this highway.

President Serzh Sargsyan and Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan also were on hand at the opening ceremony.

The mayor told reporters that the construction of this road was envisioned since the 1970s.

“With the construction of the road, the [traffic at the] Kentron [Downtown] district has been eased, and three districts have been interconnected. A 12 km irrigation network has been built, a European standard lighting has been installed, and 5 hectares of green space is developed,” Margaryan said.
