PreferredYEREVAN. - An event dedicated to the Earth Hour global campaign took place in Yerevan’s Mashtots Park today.
The lights of the park went out at 8:30 pm and about 200 cyclists moved from the park to the central streets of Yerevan, urging the citizens to use alternative means of transportation.
Partnership and Communications Manager at World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Armenia, Hermine Hakobyan, told Armenian News – NEWS.am that Armenia has been joining the global campaign for already the 8th year.
“The main objective of the campaign is to raise the people’s awareness so that they preserve the nature and use the natural resources sparingly. Shootings made during this campaign will be sent to the Earth Hour global team, which will see what is happening here and share those footages with the whole world,” she said.
Abovyan, Ararat, Armavir, Artashat, dilijan, Etchmiadzin, Gavar, Goris, Gyumri, Hrazdan and Vanadzor cities of Armenia have also joined the Earth Hour campaign this year.
The Earth Hour was first held in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2 million people yook part in a lights-off event to unite the efforts of the humanity in the struggle against the climate change.
