YEREVAN. – An event on the eve of Vardavar, an Armenian festival where people of social groups drench each other with water, was held in Armenia’s capital on Saturday (photos).

The event was organized by the youth union of Ararat diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ  (Vardavar) is one of the five main feasts of the Armenian Church. It commemorates the transformation or the "transfiguration" that came over Jesus while He was praying. This day is also associated with an old Armenian tradition of pouring water on one another. Some sources attribute the tradition as a remnant of an Armenian pre-Christian celebration.
