There is almost no difference in the political part of a new framework agreement between Armenia and the European Union, President Serzh SArgsyan said in an interview with Euronews.

“We had to make sure that there is no contradiction with the Eurasian Economic Union which we are members of,” President said.

The Armenian leader said that from the very beginning of the negotiations Armenia's standing was that it is possible to have association agreement with the EU and close integration into the Eurasian Union.

“The Russians never told us that we could never sign such an agreement. They told us if you want to do so you can but you might pay for the energy in world market price,” he added.

Asked whether he sees a future of the Eurasian Union as a match to the EU, President replied: “I think it is too early to talk about achieving equivalents, it would be better to talk about cooperation between the two blocs, as we, with our own example, showed it is possible.”

Commenting on the question what Armenia can offer to the European Union, besides Henrikh Mkhitaryan, President said Armenia has many famous figures, such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and chess grandmaster Levon Aronian.

“We can also be useful by exporting our agricultural products, IT is also developing very fast in Armenia. But above all we can be a friendly neighbor for the Europeans, a predictable neighbor,” he added.

The President also commented on Armenia’s relations with NATO. He informed about the recent meeting with NATO Secretary General and invitation he had conveyed to visit Armenia to celebrate cooperation that the sides had for previous 25 years.

“We do not see any contradiction between this partnership and our alliance with Russia,” he added.
