YEREVAN. – The elections are that foundation, that condition which ensures the existence of such a phenomenon as democracy.

President of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, stated the aforesaid in his address during the session of parliament.

In his words, if the constitution of Armenia states that the latter is a free democratic state, that power in the country belongs to the people and the latter exercise that power by conducting elections, this precept shall be followed in a sacred manner.

“Since all this is written in our constitution, we are simply obligated to ensure conditions for exercising of the power by the people,” Mirzoyan stressed.

At the same time, the NA speaker said, “The electoral system in Armenia was not working before,” but the snap parliamentary election in December 2018 fully complied with all the necessary conditions, and international observers have also confirmed this fact.

In addition, Ararat Mirzoyan compared holding high-quality elections with oxygen. In particular, he said conducting democratic elections has vital importance for the country, albeit sometimes they are not so palpable.
