The cost price of sugar produced in Armenia is higher than the cost price of imported sugar because Russia currently sells sugar at a low price. This is what Chairman of the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition of Armenia Gegham Gevorgyan told journalists today.

“We observe a negative balance in the sugar sector. The studies on the dynamics of sugar prices — launched in January 2017 — show that the price of sugar has dropped from AMD 391 to AMD 223. There is also sugar sold for AMD 209, which is not too good because the average cost price is much higher in Armenia than the actual price at which it is sold. Seasonal decrease of prices causes problems. The price of sugar may go up in January because this price drop isn’t considered normal. It’s just that the large resources of sugar are being imported from the Russian Federation to Armenia at low prices. There is no problem with quality,” he stated.
