During a briefing at the National Assembly of Armenia today, deputy of the ruling My Step Alliance Suren Grigoryan said he and his colleagues have campaigned for the referendum for constitutional amendments and he hasn’t noticed that citizens aren’t aware of the upcoming referendum at all. He also admitted that there were one or two people who were unaware of the referendum and that he and his colleagues had to clarify the situation for those citizens.

On April 5, Armenia will hold a referendum for amendments to a particular article of the Constitution. The authorities have proposed early termination of the powers of 16 members of the Constitutional Court, including the president of the Constitutional Court, referring to them as representatives of the former “regime”. Besides the ruling My Step Alliance and former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s Armenian National Congress political party, all other political parties have refused to participate in the campaign and have referred to it as legally vulnerable, to say the least. The response will be considered affirmative not only in case of half of YES votes, but also not less than quarter of voters included in voters’ list, that is, nearly 650,000 people.
