In its opinion, the Venice Commission stated that it is necessary to ensure irremovability of judges, which is a precondition for independence of the judiciary. This is what deputy of the Prosperous Armenia faction of the National Assembly of Armenia Mikayel Melkumyan told reporters today, touching upon the advisory opinion of the Venice Commission regarding the Constitutional Court.
“Armenia wants to have puppet courts, and this means the Constitutional Court will be dysfunctional because if three of the judges leave, five judges have to render a decision. The Prosperous Armenia Party states that the ruling majority is leading the country to a deadlock with its actions.
The Venice Commission says there has to be a transitional stage, meaning judges need to be changed step-by-step, not immediately,” he said.
