I suppose the deputies of the National Assembly of Armenia can apply to the Constitutional Court with regard to the amendments to the Constitution. This is what Constitutional Court member Alvina Gyulumyan told reporters today, touching upon the fact that Prosperous Armenia Party has announced its intention to apply to the Court, while Bright Armenia Party has issued a statement stating that the Constitution doesn’t provide deputies of the National Assembly with the opportunity to apply to the Constitutional Court with this specific issue.
“Of course, this is an issue that can be discussed,” she said.
In response to the claim of the authorities that there would be a direct conflict of interest in case the amendments were discussed in the Constitutional Court since the issue concerns the Constitutional Court, Gyulumyan said the following: “It is internationally accepted that constitutional courts examine any issue. In the past, the Constitutional Court of Armenia would also examine the constitutionality of the provisions of the law on the Constitutional Court.”
